Should we treat sugar like a drug?
We keep consuming greater and greater quantities of sugar, which is why understanding its biochemical mechanisms is so important: That knowledge can help us kick the habit.

Before the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the average person never even had sugar. Today, the average American consumes 150-170 pounds of it a year and many illnesses have been linked to our over-consumption of sugar (like heart disease). This is one of the lingering legacies of slavery and colonialism.
